Discussing “Spunk”

What is the main conflict?

How does one deal with a force you are scared of when it takes what you want or threatens you.

Who are the central characters?

Spunk and Joe Kanty

What makes the central character interesting/compelling?

I think what makes both characters interesting is that we have all either seen or experienced what it is like to have someone or something more powerful than you take what you believe is yours or threaten you.

How did the story make me feel?

This story can be very triggering for some readers. First the fact that the two men are feuding over who the love and attention of a woman like she is a possession and not a person who can make her own choices.

Also, if you were ever bullied, this might touch a sore spot.

However, in the end, Hurston does something very clever to release the tension.

What questions did this stories raise in my mind?

What is bravery? Are you braver when you face a thing even when you are terrified inside? Are you really brave when you know you have an over whelming advantage.

Who would find this story interesting?

This would be an interesting story for any reader from early adult onward. I think it could spark some very interesting conversation.

Another Point

I am seeing a pattern of how Hurston uses the guys who hang at the local gathering place to be the catalyst for the major conflict in her stories.
